New State, New Time Zone

We had a short drive today, 3 1/2 hours from Amarillo to Raton, New Mexico. We followed US287 north, then turned west onto Route 354, a long, lonely country road through ranch land.

If we saw two other vehicles on this road, it was a lot! We then turned north again onto route 385 at the small town of Channing. This ran into US87, taking us across the state line into New Mexico, a new state for us, and a new time zone! I found the drive very interesting.

Oil rig being readied for drilling (I think!)

Cattle ranchlands

Wildlife...pronghorn antelope? Please correct me if I'm wrong!

Capulin Volcano National Monument

Finally...our first glimpse of the snow-capped mountains...awesome!

We arrived at our campground for the next two nights, Cedar Rail RV Park and Campground at the Raton Pass, New Mexico. It's a small campground, but the views are breath-taking.

The view from our front door.

On Thursday, we'll head out on our final leg to our campground for the summer, Chalk Creek in Nathrop Colorado. We're looking forward to spending the summer in this beautiful area, as well as meeting new friends and learning new things :-).

  6. Yep! That's a pronghorn.... NM is one of my favorite states... maybe because that's where Bill was born and raised... There are 9 National Wildlife Refuges in NM... Maxwell NWR is right off I25, just south of you... might be fun to stop in for a visit...
